SOUND IDENTIFICATION SKILLS
It is a useful skill for every age group to practice matching sounds to the sources of such sounds, using the sense of hearing. Sound identification quizzes can be used for fun activities. A more critical concern is the need for children to learn to build skills in telling the source, pitch, frequency, duration, and such features of a sound for their health and safety.
See the list of videos attached and choose the one that applies to your level.
Sounds Without FV #1A
Level: All ages
Sample questions: To young child:
1- What sounds did you hear? (Using the sense of hearing.)
2- If you are counting at a regular speed as your talking speed, how high can you count to match the same time as the time for the last sound ? (Time telling/duration). Now do the same in guessing how long each of the other sounds lasted.
Sounds Without Full Vision #1B
Level: Elementary grades, but mainly age 7 and up.
1- What sounds did you hear?
2- How long did each sound last?
3- Did you hear silent times between each sound?
4- Where are the characters at each part in the story?
Sounds Without Full Vision #1C
Level: Best only for anyone above age 12.
1- What sounds did you hear?
2- How long did each sound last?
3- If you heard any silent period, how long did it last after each sound? Imagine this as a real life situation by estimating that longer periods of silence occurred between each sound (e.g., 15-30 minutes of silence).
4- Where are the characters, and what are they doing at each point in the story?
5- What is happening throughout this story?
DIRECTION OF TRAVEL SKILLS
Observe the direction of each walker's journey and try to draw the path that the walker takes. Consider directions as right, left, up or forward, down or backwards, and rotating/circular. It is also useful to think of directional signs as east, west, north, and south.
See the SAMPLE drawing that shows the results of a walker's journey. Anyone can create a drawing while following the walker in the video. Our members can do more by sending a copy of own map to receive "Congrats" if the sketch is a close match to the walker's real life journey.
A map can be submitted to: Services-Sales@variedresources.org
